Berg-Silver Brumby Challenge 2008

Berghutte – Silver Brumby Challenge 2008
By David Price Club Captain

Thursday 7th August – Thredbo this year turned it on for one of our favourite inter club events, the Berghutte – Silver Brumby Challenge. Blue skies and little wind with cold temperatures produced a picture perfect race day for our team of :

David Price
Lyn Kearney
Kate Manka
Kristiane Price
Merryn Wallis
David Keith
Greg Hutton
John Shuttleworth
Michael Hiscock
Paul Manka
Andrew Blomfield
Bruce Wallis
Elise Martin
Richard Martin
Malcolm Martin

Unfortunately, the results sheets disappeared from the lodge wall soon after posting by someone anonymous so the following is from memory.

Silver Brumby fielded 38 keen racers against our rugged 15. The late start at 2pm worked a little in our favour as it left enough time for our energetic mob to get up and compete, as in previous years, the 10:30am start proved a real challenge for our athletic bunch. Again, the Challenge consisted of two runs with the winner being the one with the narrowest of margins. The third run was the scratch event and awarded to the fastest times.

This year was another very closely fought battle, with the first few places in the Challenge (best 5 places) from SB ranging from 1/100th sec to 3/100th sec and Berg not far off their “pace”. I recall the largest differential was from Berg at 0.5secs. Silver Brumby claimed the Val Parcel Trophy for the second year running, as well as the male and female fastest time in the 3rd run.

Our own competition within the event, The Joe Manka Memorial for closest differential of 2 runs male and female was won by Kate Manka and Andrew Blomfield. Our Berg Cup for fastest scratch time in the 3rd run was taken out by the brother and sister team Merran and Bruce Wallis to much applause.

The presentation was held in the newly opened “private bar” at Berntis, where we hope we will forever be returning to celebrate the occasion; Nick has done a terrific job of welcoming us for the past two years.
